Creating New Beauty Culture

Wow, what a year it has been! And with a year I mean since the last blog post in 2019… Of course, it’s been a very special year in many ways, but let me introduce you to why this post is titled as it is, since as usual, I jumped with both feet onto a new path of creating something meaningful to me at this moment in time.

If you have followed my journey, you know that I grew up in central Finland surrounded by countless lakes and wild forests and that I have travelled and lived literally around the world, both for work and for fun.

What I have not written so much about before, is the fact that especially during my years as a cabin crew member, I started paying more attention to my beauty regime. Flying is perhaps one of the worst things you can do to your beauty. ‘The on-going jet lag, fatigue, radiation, and air-conditioning’ is not really the list you would suggest as a skincare routine. I started to have the urge to find cosmetics that were genuinely good for my skin and health and could provide relief to the lifestyle I was living.

Thanks to my busy flight schedule in central Europe, I discovered the German natural cosmetics market. It grew larger and larger before my eyes when living in Berlin, and that’s when I started to search for Nordic alternatives – there had to be some. And what I found (not so much for my surprise in the end), was incredibly huge supply across all the Nordic countries.

The Nordic and Arctic nature is known to be full of powerful remedies due to the extreme weather year-round. For a long time, the Nordic ingredients have been the secret of the natural beauties of the north, but as the natural beauty trend kept rising worldwide, I wanted to find a way to introduce the best Nordic products made and bring them to everyone’s reach.

The idea for Nordic Natural Beauty Awards grew strong during the summer of 2019. A combination of three main thoughts built the foundation for the awards –  my frustration towards the ongoing toxic cosmetics market, the massive growth of natural beauty brands in the north, and the need world kept expressing for magical, yet natural beauty products.

Nordic Natural Beauty Awards is the first-ever, yearly online awards contest of its’ kind, celebrating solely all-natural, Nordic cosmetics. The first edition was launched in March 2020. To demonstrate the luxury that natural beauty really is, the awards’ jury consists of 50 Nordic, internationally renowned stars coming from different fields – such as music, cinema, sports, and fashion.

Nordic Natural Beauty Awards 2020 winners were announced on the awards’ INSTAGRAM LIVE on Tuesday, October 27th, 2020. The prizes were presented by guests from the star jury; Clara Mae, Aníta Briem, Petra Silander, and Sisse Marie. The 2nd edition of the awards will be launched soon.

I am so thrilled to see the impact that this awards contest has already made, and keeps making, on the Nordic beauty producers’ businesses and in the world at large. The world needs to get closer to nature again, and what better way to start that than where we got lost the most – our values of beauty.

I believe that natural beauty is the ultimate beauty – and the ULTIMATE LUXURY – that the world is looking for in this very special year of 2020, and in the future.

Value Manifesto Mirrors Today’s World

WHAT IS ART?

This is a question that most of us, and many art professionals even, find difficult to answer.

In Wikipedia, art is explained as follows:

Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory, or performing artifacts (artworks), expressing the author’s imaginative, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power.

My personal addition to this would be that art mirrors the world of the time of creation. Whichever piece of art we take into the evaluation, we can find the artist’s surrounding world through their work.

But how could we mirror then this digital, invisible, and intangible world we live in today?

VALUE MANIFESTO, the first crypto multiple and a pioneer art project in today’s blockchain era created by Timo Niemeyer, has found a unique way to mirror today’s world.

After becoming involved in this project, I cannot help but wonder: What comes to the invisible concepts, online communication, shared economy models, and manifesting against the outdated authorities, is this the perfect reflection of today?

Have a look at the project yourself at VALUE MANIFESTO’S WEBSITE and wonder with me!

30

I turned 30 years old over the weekend and my head has been filled with a lot of thoughts these days, and may I add, lovely thoughts. For me, with the support that I have received, it feels only a blessing to move on to the next decade of beauty.

Today, the 6th of December, it is the Independence day of Finland, a country that shaped my heart and soul. According to my parents, I have behaved independently since a very young age, and to strengthen it, Finland gave me amazing opportunities to continue so.

In my opinion, independence is all about having the freedom to choose. It is a great word to describe the state of being Finnish, and also my state of being 30 now.

To be able to be in this state today, I am grateful for so many things I have experienced over the years, so I decided to take a challenge to write down 30 things I am grateful for. Making this list took quite a while, but I urge you to do the same, it puts everything in perspective. So here we go.

Today, I’m grateful for …

1. the 101-year-old Finland that has given me countless opportunities along the way, eg. in education, health care, social system and safety

2. my loving parents that have always believed in me and given me the freedom to realize any of my dreams

3. my siblings that have given me their unconditional love and support

4. my extended family for providing me a support network

5. irreplaceable friends around the world that have always been there for me

6. comfortable homes over the years that have given me shelter

8. our globe Earth, an unbelievable beauty of species and provider for our basic needs

9. fresh water that keeps me alive and clean

10. my teachers, coaches and supervisors that pushed me to learn and become wiser

11. Team Academy for making me believe I can do whatever I want in life

12. all forms of music that give food to my soul every day

13. the dance organizations that have let me discover my passion for dance

14. the countless books I’ve read that enabled me to experience different settings in life

15. the modern technology that gives us channels to create and communicate on another level

16. diverse cultures that enrich our interaction

17. art, in whichever form, because it allows us to understand our life and world in a deeper level

18. caring strangers that have helped my day one way or another, kept the last metro’s door open, smiled at me in a funny situation, picked up what I had dropped by mistake

19. entrepreneurs that keep our societies running and interesting with their incredible persistence

20. peace warriors that keep fighting for our common justice and well-being

21. history that has taught us lessons how to be better humans

22. big city rush that, with its’ changing faces and monuments, reminds me that I’m part of a bigger entirety

23. the modern travel industry that has made it accessible to move easily to explore our incredible Earth

24. cabin crew colleagues that were my company in discovering all those foreign lands

25. outstanding motion pictures that have inspired me to become a maker myself

26. filmmakers in Berlin that have given me the privilege to be involved in such incredible projects

27. time because its’ changing speed makes me understand the important things in life

28. realness, because in these times of virtual connections and fake news the realness reminds us to live in the present

29. love and kindness that I have been and I am privileged to share

30. last but definitely not least, I’m grateful for a very special person by my side that reminds me to be my amazing self and made turning 30 such a beautiful event for me.

Thank you all for shaping my life so far!

Happy Independence Day Finland,
let this remind us all that peace gives us opportunities to build something extraordinary.

Your Vote And Smile Make The Difference

Finland will have a presidential election next week, but the advance voting around the globe is already on this week. The ride that I took to the Finnish embassy myself here in Berlin, gave me goosebumps. I rode all the way from the heart of eastern Berlin – Friedrichshain, through the city center with a view of The Brandenburg Gate, to the west of Berlin, which only few decades ago, was just a dream to someone.

By experiencing this road to vote to a foreign embassy, I realized that we have come really far from those horrific times. We do live in uncertain times, in a world that doesn’t promise us much and overloads us with negative news from every social channel. But as a response to all that negativity, we have always the chance to make a positive change. Remember what we have been through as a world, and are still going through. You can start with little gestures yourself, and extend it to your family and friends and all the people you meet and can reach.

The important thing as a society of living human beings, is to connect with one another. We are learning foreign languages to break the barriers, and accepting as well as adapting each others ways of living to build a comfortable common place. We are (also literally) breaking the walls and opening our hearts to new people to enter.

Democratic societies with free elections are one way of making the world a little better, through the leaders. I gave my vote to a candidate that represents the better world for us as human beings in this beautiful nature. My fellow Finns around the world, go and give your own vote for the preferred tomorrow.

And my friends in any country in the world, always take every chance you get, to influence your surroundings to become a little more positive. Smile to the child talking in the bus, help a fallen person back up on their feet, vote when you have elections in your country or area, post positive news and remember to keep your comments constructive in real life as well as online.

Which little gestures do you practice every day, to make this world a little better?

3 Dreams On My Map

Oh boy and girl, how many ideas and dreams pop in my mind. All the time. Especially during these quiet times of the winter.

I haven’t put my dreams and thoughts on a map physically in a long time, and they have changed quite drastically since that last time. Either I have made those dreams come true, or then realized they were not something I wanted after all.

Well, as we know, the key to make anything happen, is planning. So finally, this calm moment up in my Nordic home gave me time and space to plan and do my new map. Here ‘the making of’ in few pictures..

2. Creating my own piece of culture in this world – with a big heart.

3. Uniting the people and places around me and building it to be my cozy home.

All the points on the map of my dreams have been growing in me past years, and I see myself realizing them step by step. The concrete map will help me to keep my path and give me the needed strength.

As much as you have ideas and dreams in your mind, they will stay only ideas and dreams, unless you put them on paper and make a plan.

DREAM, PLAN, DO!

Creating Our Earth – From sadness to respectful world of tomorrow

The past week has been very tough mentally for me, as it’s been for the most of the world. Beirut, Paris, Bamako, Syria, Iraq… The list continues. ‘Why’ and ‘what next’ seem to be the questions in the air.

In the western media, Paris was shown largely and Beirut seemed to be forgotten at the same time. But so were and are forgotten countless of tragedies all over the planet every day.

The lives of Lebanese lost were not any less important than all different nationalities that were lost in Paris. The reason why Paris incident has touched me personally the most and also some others, is because I lived in the city before. Those exact streets were my home. Every time I visit Paris, I go out around the same areas, I was there two weeks before the attacks, and I was there again now one week after. My friends live there. It could have been them. It could have been me. This closeness of events makes us react stronger to some events than others, even they are all as horrifying.

eiffel-tower-in-bleu-blanc-rouge-paris-france

A view of Paris from Trocadéro, now one week after a tragedy that I will never forget. To me it represents our humanity, the happiness we can have when we learn to respect and love.

Personally, my mind has been full of plain sadness. I have needed my time to mourn, to leave my condolences to those who lost their families/friends in these inhuman attacks around the world. And sadly, they still continue.

There comes always a turning point then, we lift our faces up again to see forward. What shall we do, how can we help, what do we need to improve, where can we start? Most of all, how can we make the new world of tomorrow better?

We need to be kind to one another. We need to learn to tolerate and understand different points of view in life, we need to stop bullying and start building friendships, we must stop bombing and start sending flowers. In every city and country.

Most of all, instead of all the mess of today, we need to focus on the future, to build it better and always more peaceful than the world today. It all starts from children. What we learn at young age, we bring to the world later on. If we learn hatred, how can anything beautiful come out of it later on?

Our Earth is full of countless different cultures, religions, and habits. We need to learn from each other, let our children learn, let the next generations build without all the limits we might have in the world today. We need to concentrate on building respect and friendships, in daycare, in preschools, in schools, and continuously in universities, work places and different communities. This needs to be part of everyday experience. Let respect live in us.

Who will start to do all this? We all will.

How shall we? Be kind. Respect. Communicate. Learn. Innovate. Create. And most of all, smile.

About travelling

I happened to read a blog post about travelling by an old good friend of mine. She left an incredibly tough question in the end of the page; ‘What does travelling mean to you?’

metro-metropolitain-paris-france

When I lived close to Paris, I really loved all the metro and train trips – got some time to think, travel in mind.

Travelling is a word, meaning usually ‘to move from one place to another’, as in my previous pictures. But there is so much more to it, it’s both a physical and mental life-changing experience.

At the moment, travelling is work for me, in a literal way. Long distances became my office and far lands home. When you are far from home physically and culturally, you really need to feel inside you and search your peace, your history, culture and values. Only by knowing first what I am made of, I can start learning from others.

Deeper inside we are not so different. Cultures, religions, traditions and history have made us act differently. But we all have same feelings, we need love, we want to understand the world, we get angry when something doesn’t work as we are taught, we forgive when things are settled in a respectful and constructive manner.

Travelling means meeting the world and through acceptance learning to live the world. At first travelling was mainly physical for me, but as it became mental and spiritual, it became home.

Walking speed

One detail that differs between cultures, is the speed of walking. I visited the museum of communication in Frankfurt am Main where you can among all the other things explore the speeds physically.

The task was to walk a so-called ‘catwalk’ as normal as possible and see which country your speed matches. The first time I tried to walk normally, as I do on the streets. The result was the speed of Sweden, which hits very close home up in Scandinavia.

world-map-how-fast-do-you-walk-museum-fur-kommunikation-frankfurt-am-main

With a growing excitement, I tried all the different speeds to experience the feelings people have around the world while walking. I had to almost run to reach the fastest Swiss, and when moving as the Brazilians, I had time to improve my samba moves.

how-fast-do-you-walk-communication-museum-frankfurt-am-main

Here are some examples of speed in different countries, for example the results of this walking test of 10 meters

What is not included in this test, is that people walk with different speeds also according to the area they are from, whether they live in a city or countryside, and whether they have to hurry or not.

Even though I don’t like generalizing things, and even less groups of people, but an average walking speed tells something about the culture. How about, which nationality would you be?

Is It The Freedom That Brings The Happiness?

Freedom. What is it? This is the subject the famous Brazilian author Paulo Coelho is writing about in his novel ‘Zahir’.

Paulo-coelho-zahir-book-freedom

Is it freedom to be free from all the possible obligations of the society? Free from work, free from taxes and free from a specific place. Is it freedom to have the possibility to come and go as one wishes, and without obligations to anyone?

In case you’re able to succeed to find all the freedom, will you be happy? Can one be happy free from everything? What is happiness anyway?

I personally think both freedom and happiness are states of mind. You won’t be any freer if you leave your partner, and neither any happier if you buy a new car. The only way is to work on ourselves, develop our own minds. Then even those points would make you freer and/or happier.

In order to experience happiness, we have to be brave enough to let the freedom take its place in our lives, and there’s no space for jealousy or any other disturbing feeling in this process.

One needs to search freedom and the following happiness in full understanding of the universe. We need to be able to give space for everything and everyone around us, enjoy the path of life with patience and stay open for unknown.

What is freedom then in concrete? Is it the permission that I gave to myself to enjoy this beautiful evening by a lake?

Suomi-finland-lake-summer

At this point, I’ve come to the conclusion with my thoughts that the freedom is most of all a way of thinking. The concrete side of it is very personal. Someone feels free seeing the sunset solo, someone else when sharing the moment with another one. I feel the freedom when I am able to choose from these two options.

Search yourself, find your freedom and you may start following your path to happiness.

Belonging

Belonging to something is a big and important part of our lives. Cultures and all the groups around give us the privilege to fill the life with connections and caring.

We all belong to many subgroups, such as bloggers, surfers and teachers. But talking about deeper connections, we start to understand ourselves, how we have become the persons that we are. Also, we learn to see behind the actions of others and respect the different ways of living.

The surrounding people and areas have the biggest effect on our lives. From our parents, we get the genes and the heritage of the family history, and from school mates and teachers, we adapt many skills for life. All the people around us influence the way we grow to be. The city, country, cultural and linguistic areas and also different unions (such as European Union) build a part of us with their history, religions, laws and habits.

The main parts of one’s behaviour, attitudes and believes come from the culture they are born in, one gets raised to live following certain laws, and one’s morals in life are likely to be based on the believes of the main religion of the country. For example, even if I don’t belong to a specific church anymore, the cultural background of Christianity in Finland stays in me – I believe it is a right thing to do to be good to one another and respect the life around without destruction.

Every single person on this planet is unique with their personal background. But regardless of all the differences there might be, we all belong to one big group – human beings of this planet. All the same. We all have thoughts and feelings.

It’s natural for a human being to gather a group around, to have a stronger feeling of belonging, such as we see the cities, countries and different cultural areas as the result of this behaviour.

But a human also moves, gets attracted by diversity and wants to improve. Since in the end we are all the same, I personally don’t understand the self-destruction of societies and the whole world in general. Limiting moving by countries borders, manipulating thinking, blocking creating and in the same, making slower the whole evolution of a human being.

A very wise friend of mine put this question in my mind with awakening words: “Isn’t it just absurd that one human being born in a certain place in a certain time cannot move free on this very planet because another creature just like him/her has decided so?”

I’m wondering if there’s a solution for us to live in peace in full diversity without made limits, power of cash, wars and poverty. The Earth is a beautiful place to live and learn. Shall we ever give a proper chance for us to improve, succeed and most of all – belong to this place and time together?
